Key takeaways
- Distributors are paid from the TER of regular plans; direct plans carry no distributor commission.
- Trail commission is an annualised % of AUM under the ARN, usually on daily average AUM and paid monthly.
- TDS under Section 194H is 2% from 01-10-2024; GST on MFD services to AMCs is under reverse charge.
- Reconcile expected vs received brokerage every month to catch ARN mapping errors and missing folios.

For a mutual fund distributor (MFD), trail commission is the main source of income. Yet many distributors only look at the total credited to their bank account each month, without checking whether it matches the assets they service. This guide explains how trail commission works in India, how it is taxed, and how to reconcile it.
Where distributor commission comes from
Every mutual fund scheme charges a total expense ratio (TER), an annual percentage of assets deducted daily from the NAV. Each scheme offers two plans:
- Regular plan: bought through a distributor. The TER includes the commission the AMC pays the distributor.
- Direct plan: bought directly from the AMC or through a channel that does not involve a distributor. There is no distributor commission, so the TER is lower.
The investor does not pay the distributor separately. The commission comes out of the scheme's expenses, which is why regular plan NAVs grow slightly slower than direct plan NAVs of the same scheme.
How trail commission works
No upfront commission
Since SEBI's changes in October 2018, mutual fund schemes follow a full-trail model. AMCs do not pay upfront commission on new investments, whether from the scheme or from their own books.
Trail on AUM
Trail commission is an annualised percentage of the assets under the distributor's ARN. In practice:
- It is usually computed on daily average AUM for the month.
- It is paid monthly.
- Rates differ by AMC, scheme and category. Equity schemes usually pay more than liquid or index funds.
- The AMC can change rates from time to time, generally prospectively.
A simplified illustration: if a distributor has an average of ₹10 crore in a scheme paying 0.80% a year, the monthly trail for a 30-day month is roughly ₹10 crore x 0.80% x 30/365, or about ₹65,750. This is hypothetical and ignores rate slabs and day-count conventions specific to an AMC.
Commission disclosure
Investors see the commission paid on their investments. The CAS shows the amount of commission paid to distributors against each regular plan holding for the period, along with the expense ratio. Distributors should be ready to explain these figures if asked.
Special incentives
SEBI has, at various times, allowed additional incentives, such as for flows from beyond the top 30 cities (B-30). These frameworks have been revised more than once. Check the current SEBI and AMFI circulars for what applies today rather than relying on an older rule.
Clawback
Some AMCs may recover commission if an investor exits within a short period, depending on their terms. Read the commission structure circular from each AMC you work with.
Where to get your brokerage statements
CAMS and KFintech provide brokerage or commission statements per ARN for the AMCs they service. Columns typically include:
- AMC and scheme
- Folio and investor name
- Transaction or AUM base on which commission was calculated
- Rate applied
- Gross brokerage
- TDS deducted
- Net amount paid
Many AMCs also send a monthly commission summary by email. Keep these together for reconciliation and for tax filing.
Tax on trail commission
TDS under Section 194H
AMCs deduct TDS on commission under Section 194H. The rate was reduced from 5% to 2% from 01-10-2024. A threshold per payer per financial year applies below which TDS is not deducted; the limit was revised in Budget 2025, so verify the current figure. TDS appears in Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement, and should be matched with the brokerage statements.
GST under reverse charge
Services provided by a mutual fund agent or distributor to a mutual fund or AMC are covered by the reverse charge mechanism under Notification 29/2018-Central Tax (Rate). The AMC pays GST on the commission, so the distributor generally does not charge GST on it. Registration and filing obligations can still depend on your other income and turnover, so verify with your CA, especially if you also earn insurance commission, fees or other income.
Reconciling trail commission every month
A monthly reconciliation catches errors early, while they are still easy to fix with the AMC or RTA.
What to check
- Expected vs received. Estimate trail from your AUM and rate card; compare with what was paid.
- ARN mapping errors. A folio transacted under your ARN but recorded under another ARN, or with a missing EUIN, will not pay you.
- Transferred ARN. When a client requests a change of broker to your ARN, check that the transfer has taken effect before expecting trail. When a client moves away, trail stops.
- Nil-commission folios. Direct plan holdings pay nothing. If a client switched to direct, the folio will show AUM but no brokerage.
- AUM concentration. If a large share of your trail comes from a few clients or schemes, a rate change or a single exit can move income sharply.
A sample monthly reconciliation (hypothetical)
| AMC | Avg AUM (₹ lakh) | Expected trail (₹) | Received (₹) | Difference (₹) | Likely reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AMC A | 420 | 27,600 | 27,550 | -50 | Rounding / day count |
| AMC B | 310 | 19,100 | 15,200 | -3,900 | Two folios mapped to old ARN |
| AMC C | 150 | 6,200 | 6,200 | 0 | Matched |
| AMC D | 90 | 4,400 | 0 | -4,400 | Client switched to direct plan |
Differences above a small tolerance deserve a follow-up with the RTA or AMC. Keep a log of what was raised and when it was resolved.
Doing this by hand across many AMCs is slow. A back-office software checklist can help you evaluate tools; software such as IntelliWealthPro can import brokerage files and flag gaps automatically.
Compliance basics that protect your trail
- Keep your ARN and EUIN valid and renewed on time.
- Make sure every transaction carries the correct ARN and EUIN.
- Complete KYD formalities with AMFI.
Our guide to AMFI compliance basics covers these in more detail.

Frequently asked questions
How is trail commission calculated?
It is an annualised percentage of the assets under the distributor's ARN, usually computed on daily average AUM and paid monthly. Rates vary by AMC, scheme and category and can be changed by the AMC.
Do distributors earn upfront commission?
Since SEBI's October 2018 changes, upfront commission is not paid. Distributors earn trail commission paid out of the scheme's expense ratio.
What TDS applies to trail commission?
TDS under Section 194H. The rate was reduced from 5% to 2% from 01-10-2024. A threshold per payer per financial year applies; verify the current limit.
Does a distributor charge GST on commission?
Services of a mutual fund distributor to a mutual fund or AMC fall under reverse charge, so the AMC pays the GST. Verify your position with a CA, especially if you have other income.
